The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. --Psalm 23 (NIV)

My Sholin Brother...
Posted by Al Pillarelli (Tuesday April 06 2004 @ 02:04PM EDT)
As with many others, I have many happy memories of John Wisnieski. John was my favorite story teller. One that I know he would want me to share is the time that he and I received tatoos at a DECUS event in Anaheim. We were all celebrating the 20th anniversary of OpenVMS and we were also announcing "...OpenVMS Galaxy!" (Which is always pronounced in a deep, James Earl Jones tone of voice...) Anyway, at the big party that week, there was a concession where they were doing temporary tatoos. Both of us were struck with the same wave of inspiration(?) and we each got two tatoos - one on each forearm. One of them said "OpenVMS Forever" and the other was a spectacular visual for "Galaxy". We walked around that night drinking beers and grunting in fine "Tim from Tool Time" fashion. We started making up stories of how we had carried the crucible of wisdom from the inner sanctum of VMS to our Western shors just like "Grasshopper" in Kung Fu; burning the images into our forearms -- if only in our slightly inebriated minds. That night, John bid me goodnight with an expression that he continued to use every time we met from that day on... "My Sholin Brother!"

I will miss you John; more than I can express. You made me laugh at myself and the world around me. You taught me so many things. You were always there for me. So, now, My Sholin Brother, let me say goodbye like this:

O God, the cause and effect of the whole universe, the source from which we all have come, and the goal toward which we all are bound, receive this soul, [My Sholin Brother] who is coming to Thee, into Thy parental arms. May Thy forgiving Glance heal his heart. Lift him from the denseness of the earth. Surround him with the Light of Thine own Spirit. Raise him up to heaven which is his true dwelling place. We pray Thee, grant him the blessing of Thy most exalted Presence. May his life upon earth become as a dream to his waking soul, and let his thirsting eyes behold the glorious vision of Thy Sunshine. (by Hazrat 'Inayat Kahn) Goodbye my friend, my Sholin Brother.
